About the Career Coach – Career Development & Planning

After many years of leading teams of people and working with them to create robust development plans, coaching them to prepare for their next role and interview preparation.

My genuine interest in helping people get ahead in life has lead me on this path of Career Development & Planning.

Career Development & Planning

My background: I have predominately worked in the dairy industry in the Regulatory and Quality arena. This enabled me to work with a large number of culturally diverse people in various teams – I truly believe that everybody wants to do a great job BUT many people are in the wrong role and therefore unable to perform at their best. I was lucky enough early in my career to identify what motivated me and by identifying the motivators I was able to ensure I incorporated that into my day and therefore created job satisfaction.

Happy-Post-it

I also believe that development or career planning mean you don’t have to leave your current role, a lot of development can occur within your current role to make you the best at it and increase your enjoyment!

My style: I like to talk to people in a relaxed environment to ensure people are comfortable and therefore getting the most out of the sessions. I can generate ideas very quickly and pose questions to explore the boundaries. I believe work is only part of the overall picture and therefore look to ensure any recommendations are incorporated into ‘life’ and don’t become an arduous task.

Hey

Colin was instrumental in helping me formulate a plan to accelerate my development, leveraging professional opportunities to not only advance my career but also to advance my contribution to community work on my Marae and vice-versa.

As a NZ Maori woman I really appreciated Colin’s openness and respectful approach to ensure there was cultural sensitivity. I would recommend Colin to all who are driven and inspired to succeed.

Thanks,

The Career Coach gets to work.

With wife Gemma, Colin runs a water treatment service, supplying dairy farmers from Taupo to the cape. “It removes iron and manganese and kills E.coli.”

The couple have also become new parents, with the birth of nine-week-old Saoirse. “She’s beautiful and we’re adjusting our lives around her somewhat now!”

In addition, after losing his job last year, Colin has set up a new business, The Career Coach, offering career advice and guidance.

Try Toastmasters for a flying start

Everyone has a story to tell and for those who are a bit shy about public speaking, help is at hand.

The Lower Waikato Toastmaster’s club meets twice a month, and is dedicated to communication and leadership skills development, says newly elected PR head Colin Oliver.

“I heard about the group earlier this year and it’s teaching me a number of skills and techniques; thinking on my feet, confidence in speaking in front of people and leadership. We’re a small, friendly club and keen to welcome new members – we all learn together.”
